Let’s be honest—imposter moments happen to all of us. During Women's History Month, we recognize courageous action and can assume the women who made history conquered their "Imposter Monster."
As with any challenge, it's helpful to have a plan. Read on for the Shero community's fail-proof plan to shove imposter moments to the side. I use it on a regular basis!
When self-doubt creeps in, the first thing I do is recognize it. One of the best strategies is to get curious about what that self-doubt is trying to tell you. Is it saying, “I can’t”? “I’m not ready”? “I’m not capable”? Then, I ask myself—is that really true?
Often, those doubts are not based on reality. Chances are, you are ready to try something new, and you are capable of figuring it out. Think back: have you ever been in a situation where you had no idea what you were doing? We’ve all been there! And what happened? You figured it out—you survived. In fact, you’ve survived 100% of those tough moments and made it to the other side every single time.
When those imposter moments hit, here’s what I do:
1. Pause and take a deep breath.
2. Get curious about the thoughts running through my mind. What is the self-doubt really saying?
3. Ask yourself: “What’s really true here?”
Once I figure out what’s actually true, I take action—any small step to move forward. This step is crucial because action helps shift your mind and body out of imposter syndrome.
Remember, those moments of doubt will come, but they don’t define you. It’s how you respond to them that shapes your confidence and progress. So next time the Imposter Monster rears its ugly head, get curious, challenge it, and take one step forward, no matter how big or small. Let me know how it goes!
