As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to share some encouraging statistics about the impact of early detection. Early screening and timely diagnosis can make a world of difference, providing hope and significantly improving outcomes for those affected by breast cancer.
- Early detection boosts survival rates. When breast cancer is detected early, at a localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is a remarkable 99% according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Early detection through mammograms increases the chances of successful treatment and recovery.
- Decline in breast cancer death rates. The ACS also reports that breast cancer death rates have fallen by 43% from 1989 to 2020, largely due to increased awareness, earlier detection through screening, and improved treatments.
- Mammography is a critical tool. A 2020 study by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) found that regular mammograms reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer by 20-40% in women aged 50-74. The benefits of regular screening are clear—early detection can save lives.
The bottom line: Self-exams and mammograms are a must! Schedule yours and encourage friends, family, and coworkers to do the same. We are all counting on you to be here and to be healthy!
