Last week we discussed how to prepare for your year-end review. Today, I want to empower you with insight into a skill that can transform your career and personal growth - Your Gap Skill.
1. Identify Your Gap Skill
What exactly is a gap skill? Simply put, it's a crucial missing piece in your skill set that when closed can catapult you from where you are to where you want to be. It's the knowledge that takes you from an Engineer II to III, for example, or from a Marketing Manager to a Director. To identify your gap skill, look no further than the individuals who are in the roles for which you strive. What do they know and what do they do that you haven't mastered yet?
For example, if you're an Engineer II aspiring to become an Engineer III, your gap skill might be advanced project management or technical acumen. If you're a Marketing Manager aiming for the Director role, your gap skill could be strategic planning or budget management.
2. Create a Plan to Close the Gap
Now that you've identified your gap skill, it's time to make a plan to bridge that divide. Research resources that can help you acquire the necessary knowledge and expertise. This might include books, online courses, workshops, or programs. Remember, "To be it, you have to see it." Connect with a mentor or mentors who have already mastered the skill you're after. Learn from their experiences, ask questions, and seek guidance.
Make a commitment to yourself that you'll put in the time and effort required to close the gap.
3. Communicate It to Your Manager
While self-improvement is a personal journey, it's essential to communicate your aspirations and the value of your new skill to your manager. Share your plan with them. Be sure to articulate how this skill will not only benefit you as an individual but also contribute to your team and the company at large. Your manager will likely appreciate your proactive approach to self-improvement and your dedication to enhancing your contributions.
Remember, gap skills are the keys to unlocking new opportunities and propelling yourself forward. They demonstrate your commitment to growth and your capacity to adapt to the ever-evolving professional landscape.
Are you ready to identify your gap skill, create a plan, and communicate your aspirations to your manager? With the right mindset and dedication, you can bridge the gap and elevate your career to new heights. It's time to invest in yourself and take the first step toward your brighter, more confident future.
